Too much music for today’s DJ
If you had asked me 2 – 3 years ago whether or not it was possible to have too much music, I would have told you no way. I always used to feel that it was always better to have more than not enough, simply because you never know what the person would want to hear at that time. I listen to almost everything and am quite unbiased with my music, in fact, my collection of music contains a high amount of very strange and obscure music. All my life, I have used computers in order to gain music, from the days of having dial up and Napster, I have never deleted anything as long as the songs sounded good.
However, we are in a much different age now and DJ music collections have turned into something completely different. I like to use a combination of a mash up style music with digital DJing with software such as Serato and Traktor. These days, there is no more burning CDs and moving them around. Computers have made making remixes even easier, and now the collections of DJs have grown from 1000 songs to tens of thousands of songs in just a few years.
Often, when people are in a club, they begin to wonder where the original version of the song went. The only time people hear the original version of any songs these days is when it is first released, within a month after the release date, there are around 10 different remixes being played. There is a much higher amount of genres these days compared to the 80s or 90s. If you are looking for a song these days, it can take quite a substantial amount of time to find what you’re looking for, this is why good, well thought out organisation of your music collection is vital and why the digital files that you have need to be created in order to help you to play a great set.
Personally, I’ve been DJ for more than eight years and there is no way that I would change the effect that computers have had on the DJ world. Having said this however, I am now finding myself much more willing to delete music that I have now accepted and know I will never really play.
