Beginner DJ – Vinyl, CD or MP3?
There is a great variety of different types of DJ roles available, there are DJs that specialise in mobile work; these DJs take a rig with them everywhere which consists of the PA system and a light show, these DJs often attend events such as weddings, birthday parties and other special events. Another type of DJ is the club DJ, these are the types of DJs that will get hired by a certain venue to perform on a regular basis. It doesn’t matter which role you decide to choose, being a DJ is extremely fun job and have lots of opportunities and will give you a lot of experience that you may never have had before. It will also give you a great social life, which is always a bonus. The most fundamental factor of being a DJ that you need to think about before anything else is exactly how you will be creating the music that you play.
There are three main different approaches to being a DJ, these are to use vinyl turntables, CD players or even digital software. Each of these different approaches come with their very own advantages and disadvantages. However, a lot of it simply comes down to your personal taste. If we go back to the form of roles that I mentioned in the first paragraph of this article, a mobile DJ will probably choose to play his music using digital MP3 files which he will more likely combined with software on a laptop or desktop PC. He may also choose to use a collection of CDs, or even put his music on a flash drive. What you decide to do will depend upon your personal preferences.
On the other hand, vinyls weigh much more than both CD and a flash stick which makes this method most inconvenient when considering that the average DJ has over 10,000 tracks in his collection. Having said this, it would make perfect sense for a club DJ is vinyls most of the time and the equipment he needs to play these be permanently located at the club. Although he would still have to bring his own vinyls to every gig he plays. However, for a mobile DJ, using vinyls would be very inconvenient method. This is because as well as taking the speakers, amplifiers, mixers, stands and various other equipment a mobile DJ needs, he would also have to take vinyls to each gig he plays.
If you are only just starting out being a DJ, then I would recommend that you either use CDs or audio MP3 files as your main choice of audio production at this point. As well as being more convenient for you to take around and use, they are also both easily interchangeable. It is possible for anyone to burn MP3 file onto a CD, much like anyone can rip the tracks from a CD to MP3 file.
You will need to choose how you plan to produce your audio before you even begin to start DJing. This is your very first and most important step. It will cost a lot of money for you to buy the equipment you require, so make sure you make the right choice.
